The software group Bending Spoons completed its acquisition of Airtable on September 4, 2026, for around 1.3 billion US dollars. What will change for Airtable customers in terms of prices, plans and product is still open. Many teams are taking the acquisition as an opportunity to review their dependence on a single US vendor. US providers like Airtable are widely used. As a US company, however, Airtable is subject to the US CLOUD Act. Under it, US authorities can, under certain conditions, demand access to data even if it is stored outside the US. This is particularly sensitive if you process HR data, customer data or data from public administration. SeaTable is the alternative to Airtable for securing your digital sovereignty: your contractual partner is SeaTable GmbH in Mainz, your data is stored in Germany, and if you want to be completely sure, you run SeaTable on your own servers. The software is developed by our partner Seafile Ltd. and provided as a Docker image. The SeaTable Cloud servers are operated exclusively by SeaTable GmbH, and only we have access to them.

Would you like to use SeaTable as an alternative to Airtable and migrate your bases? All you need is your Airtable base ID and a personal access token. When creating a base, choose “Import from Airtable” and enter your details in the import dialog. All tables, all rows including attachments and all columns except the types button, count, lookup and rollup are transferred. SeaTable automatically creates a list of the columns that were not transferred in the new base. Your views are transferred as well. SeaTable creates formula columns with the original Airtable formula as a placeholder; you then translate the formula into SeaTable syntax. Automations and interfaces are set up again in SeaTable. Airtable offers a data processing agreement with EU standard contractual clauses on request. Data residency in Europe (AWS Frankfurt) is only available on the Enterprise Scale plan, and even there metadata such as base names, scripts and user data remain in the US. We could not find Airtable on the official EU-US Data Privacy Framework list (as of September 30, 2026). Airtable is also a US company and therefore subject to the US CLOUD Act. Whether its use is permissible for your data must be assessed case by case by your data protection officer. With SeaTable, your contractual partner is SeaTable GmbH in Mainz, the cloud runs in Germany, and you can also run SeaTable on your own servers.

Bending Spoons completed its acquisition of Airtable on September 4, 2026. Bending Spoons has announced that it will invest heavily in product, support and sales. No specific changes to prices and plans are known so far. If you want to reduce your dependence on Airtable, you can import your bases into SeaTable with a few clicks and test them in parallel.

Is Airtable available for self-hosting?

No. Airtable is only available as a cloud service. With SeaTable Server and SeaTable Dedicated, on the other hand, you can decide today on which infrastructure your data is stored.

The situation is quite different with a dedicated or on-premises system. There, you can customize SeaTable extensively: you set the URL, define the templates, roles and permissions available to users, and change the logo and colors. Airtable does not offer you these freedoms. -
