## Where SeaTable goes further than Airtable

- **Deployment choice:** Airtable is only available as a cloud service. SeaTable runs as Cloud, as a Dedicated instance operated by SeaTable, or on your own infrastructure (SeaTable Server). Teams can switch between these options later.
- **Self-hosting for free:** SeaTable Server (Enterprise Edition) is free for up to 3 users with a free license file. For more users a license is purchased. Installation is described in the [admin manual](https://admin.seatable.com).
- **Customization:** On Dedicated and on-premises systems you set your own URL, templates, roles, permissions, logo and colors. In SeaTable Cloud Enterprise, logo and colors can be customized.
- **Python next to JavaScript:** Both script languages are built in and available in every plan.
- **Higher limits:** 100,000 rows per base and 100 GB of storage in the Enterprise plan, plus a Big Data feature and a team admin panel.
- **Features in the free plan:** API usage, automations, native integrations, timeline views and scripts are available even in the Free plan.
- **Data sovereignty for AI:** AI automations run on a dedicated AI server in Germany. In self-hosted setups, any LLM with an OpenAI-compatible API can be connected, self-hosted or cloud.
- **Granular permissions:** Access rights per base, table, view and column, plus row locking, in Plus and Enterprise.

## Migrating from Airtable to SeaTable

- An Airtable base ID and a personal access token are enough to import a base; the rest happens automatically.
- Transferred: all tables, all rows including attachments, all columns except the types button, count, lookup and rollup, and the views. SeaTable lists the columns that could not be transferred in the new base.
- Formula columns are created with the original Airtable formula as a placeholder. Automations and interfaces are set up again in SeaTable.

## Airtable, data protection and the Bending Spoons acquisition

Statements in this section reflect SeaTable's own analysis (as of September/October 2026).

- Bending Spoons completed its acquisition of Airtable on September 4, 2026. No specific changes to Airtable prices and plans were known at that time.
- Airtable is a US company and therefore subject to the US CLOUD Act. Under it, US authorities can under certain conditions demand access to data stored outside the US.
- Airtable offers a data processing agreement with EU standard contractual clauses on request. European data residency (AWS Frankfurt) is only available on the Enterprise Scale plan, and metadata such as base names, scripts and user data remain in the US. Airtable was not found on the official EU-US Data Privacy Framework list (as of September 30, 2026).
- SeaTable GmbH is based in Mainz, Germany. SeaTable Cloud runs in ISO 27001 certified Exoscale data centers in Frankfurt and Munich, and a data processing agreement pursuant to Art. 28 GDPR is available for all customers. This matters most for HR data, customer data and public administration.

## SeaTable as an alternative to other tools

### Excel and spreadsheets

- **When it fits:** When several people maintain the same lists, files split into versions, VLOOKUPs break or not everyone should see everything. SeaTable looks like a spreadsheet and works like a database: fixed column types, linked tables instead of VLOOKUP, real-time collaboration, and permissions per table, view and column (from the Plus plan).
- **Import:** XLSX and CSV files can be imported as a new base, a new table or into an existing table. In SeaTable Cloud, up to 100 MB and 50,000 rows per import. Formulas, embedded charts and cross-references are not imported. Links between tables are created after the import, also automatically with "compare and link". Formulas in SeaTable apply to an entire column instead of single cells.
- **Working with the data:** Views as grid, calendar, kanban, gallery and timeline; filters, grouping and sorting; charts and pivot tables; automations (100 runs per month and user on the Free plan); AI chat and AI automations; mobile browser interface and an Android app.
- **When Excel stays the better choice:** Financial models with cell references, scenario calculations and VBA macros; very large single datasets (a base holds 10,000 rows on Free, 50,000 on Plus, 100,000 on Enterprise; big data storage from Enterprise has restrictions such as no real-time sync); development teams building their own application, who may prefer a SQL database such as PostgreSQL. Permissions apply to tables, views and columns, not to single rows; for record-level restrictions SeaTable uses apps with preset filters.
